Ben Payne Original Paintings

Ben Payne is a British artist whose work has captured the imagination of collectors for over two decades. Largely self-taught, his early artistic foundation came from his late mother, a skilled artist who instilled in him the importance of observation and strong draftsmanship.

After completing his studies—including a degree in Psychology—and qualifying as a Behavioural Therapist working with children on the autism spectrum, Ben realized his true vocation lay in painting. He credits his therapeutic background with teaching him to value simplicity and to strive for direct, emotionally resonant communication—qualities that strongly inform his artistic voice.

His gallery career began in earnest in 2003, when what had been a lifelong hobby found a responsive audience through one of the UK’s leading fine art galleries, Forest Gallery. This breakthrough launched a successful trajectory, leading to solo exhibitions and widely sold limited-edition prints featuring his distinctive landscapes.

Ben’s work is often described as displaying “a certain innocence which set them apart from the work of his contemporaries”—a characteristic he happily attributes to his therapeutic training and personal aesthetic.

A pivotal moment came when, in a bid to sharpen his technique, he undertook a self-imposed challenge: painting a thousand small studies. Not only did this intensive exercise refine his skills, it unexpectedly broadened his audience—each miniature piece found its way into private collections across 22 countries, a fact Ben regards as both “incredibly humbling” and a key to his continued success.

Thematically, Ben’s work radiates a profound connection to the British coastline. Inspired by vast skies, seascapes, and the sensation of standing under an open sky, his paintings embrace what he calls imagined realism—scenes grounded in reality yet elevated to an ideal of escapism and light.

His creative process begins with light—whether it’s a sunbeam or reflected glow—around which he builds tone, perspective, and colour, aiming to draw viewers into the warmth and serenity of each scene. Today, Ben works from his studio near the south coast of England, drawing inspiration from both his surroundings and his travels across the UK and beyond. Forest Gallery is proud to have worked with Ben since the beginning of his career and is able to organise private commissions.
